Music seminar/ Showcase

Project summary and objectives

The Music+ training project includes an initial four week (8 session) personal development programme with additional skills for life training during that time. This is followed by a 10-week music business course with optional performance training, culminating in a music performance showcase. The course is based on informal learning and assessment methods with clear structured pathways to work placements and employment. The programme includes skills for life qualifications at either Level 1 or 2 and music modules accredited through Edexcel at Level 2. Social Enterprise seminars for those wishing to become self-employed will be held on a quarterly basis.

Music Plus is funded by the London Development Agency. It is a 'modular' music-training programme providing young adults aged 16+ from primarily Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds with music based training to prepare them for a variety of jobs in the music and creative industries. The main objectives are to provide these young people with some basic skills, key skills and occupational training. Through personal development, accredited training and job skills training, beneficiaries will progress towards employment, further education or training to help to fill the skills gaps within the creative industries.

Progression routes can include apprenticeships at music recording studios, work placements with organisations such as MTV, Choice FM and Westbury Music also further education at colleges such as South Thames (with Centre of Vocational Excellence in Music Technology) and much, much, more.

Gateway to Music Course

The course offers all you need to know to access the music industry including marketing and promotion, law, business and performance techniques and culminates in a music showcase at a Battersea venue. This 8-week course is an introduction to the urban music scene for performers, producers and songwriters. The course offers all you need to know to access the music industry including marketing and promotion, law, business and performance techniques and culminates in a music showcase at a Battersea venue.

The course is currently free and open to people over 18 living in the borough of Wandsworth and surrounding boroughs. The Urban Voice Gateway to Music programme will carry Level 2 accreditation through the Open College Network (OCN). OCN offers bite size, flexible learning units which allow people to work and learn in less formal ways at their own speed. The accreditation is nationally recognised and can contribute to a qualification.

The Reality Check is an essential course for anyone considering or already on the road to a career in the music industry. This personal development programme offers you the chance to take a closer look at yourself and identify your strengths and weaknesses and how these will affect your plans and goals within the reality of the challenging and competitive music industry. This programme is unique because it puts you at the centre of your future plans. It gives you an opportunity to big up yourself, your talent, your skills, and your strengths. Our aim is for you to get a reality check about the demands, challenges and personal skills you will need to be successful in the music industry and help you to identify the strengths and weaknesses in your personality.
